Depart early from Addis Ababa for a 3-hour drive south through the picturesque Great Rift Valley. Along the way, enjoy beautiful countryside views, small villages, and occasional stops at viewpoints overlooking other Rift Valley lakes.

Arrive at Lake Ziway, one of Ethiopia’s largest freshwater lakes, and take a boat ride to explore its peaceful waters. During the trip, you’ll likely see hippos and a wide range of bird species pelicans, storks, kingfishers, and the striking African fish eagle.

You’ll also visit one of the historic island monasteries, such as Debre Tsion or Tullu Gudo, where local monks share stories of ancient Ethiopian Christianity and the Ark of the Covenant legends.

Return to the lakeshore for a delicious fish lunch at a local restaurant or picnic spot by the water. Then take a short walk around the local fishing village, where you can see fishermen repairing nets and children playing by the shore.

After some relaxing time at the lake, drive back to Addis Ababa in the late afternoon, arriving before sunset.
